Chief Minister Called to Make Statement on Gaza

On a day where the Isle of Man branch of Amnesty International welcomes Palestinian journalist and filmmaker Yousef Alhelou to the Isle of Man (Friday, 13 June 2025) for a screening of his documentary The Phoenix of Gaza, the Isle of Man Green Party has written to the Chief Minister inviting him to: -

  1. Decrying the death and destruction in Gaza and calling for Isreal to comply with the order of the International Court of Justice of 26 January 2024); and,

  2. Write to the Minister of Justice of the UK (as representative of the Isle of Man) in the Government expressing concerns for the death and destruction in Gaza.

The invitation to the Chief Minister for a public statement follows statements by the Jersey Chief Minister, who made a statement that he was "absolutely appalled and distressed at the tragic circumstances that continue to unfold in Gaza".  Further stating that he deplored “the potential for major famine in Gaza,” and that everyone “needs to work together to end this situation as soon as possible, and Jersey will play its part.”

Separately, the Republic of Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin made a statement that Israel’s war had “lost any moral compass in terms of its unacceptable impact on the civilian population and on children”.  The Taoiseach also stated that “It’s quite shocking what is now happening within Gaza” and that “it must be considered a war crime.”

The Isle of Man has historically played an outsized role in upholding the rule of law and the Isle of Man Green Party has called upon the Chief Minister to show leadership on this distressing and devastating matter.
